Does Online Weight Loss Coaching Work? What Research Says

Short answer: yes, it tends to work better than going it alone, but the edge can fade over time if the habits don't stick. In studies, people with a remote coach lose more weight than people who only track on their own. The good coaches plan for that fade from day one.

If you've tried apps, eating plans and gym memberships, it's fair to ask whether a coach on a screen is any different. Here's what the research says, in plain words.

What the studies found

A coach beats tracking alone, at least for the first year. In a German trial of 180 employees, one group had telephone coaching, one group used tracking tools only, and one group did nothing. At 12 months, the coached group had lost about 3.1 kg (around 7 lbs), the tracking group about 1.9 kg, and the do-nothing group stayed the same. Only the coached group was clearly better than doing nothing.

The edge can fade. When researchers followed the same people for 3 years, the groups ended up about the same. The coaching worked while it was happening. It didn't automatically last.

Coaching plus an app helps a little. A 2023 review of 14 studies with almost 2,500 people found coaching plus an app led to about 2 kg (4.5 lbs) more weight loss than usual care. It wasn't clearly better than the app alone, so the coaching style matters.

Video coaching can work well. A small 12-week trial with video coaching found much bigger losses than the control group. It was only 25 people, so take it as a good sign, not proof.

So what actually makes coaching work?

Reading between the lines of these studies, and from what we've seen since 2015, three things matter.

  1. A real person who adjusts the plan. Tracking tells you what happened. A coach helps you figure out why, and what to change this week.

  2. One habit at a time. Big overhauls fall apart around week three. Small layers stack up.

  3. A plan for after. This is where most programs drop the ball. If the habits only work while someone is watching, the weight comes back when the watching stops.

That third one is why our 8-Week Program has a check-in at Week 12. It's not a test. It's an honest look at whether it held once nobody was telling you what to do.

Online vs in person

For weight loss, the room doesn't matter much. What matters is how often you talk, whether the plan changes with you, and whether you trust the person.

Online has some real upsides:

  • No drive, no parking, no gym schedule.

  • You can do a call from your kitchen, which is where the work happens anyway.

  • You can work with the coach you want, even if they're not in your city.

All of our coaching is online by phone or video. We're based in Austin, and clients work with us from all over the country.

How to tell if an online coach is any good

Ask these before you pay:

  • Will I talk to the same person each week? Or is it a rotating team or a chatbot?

  • What happens after the program ends? Is there any follow-up?

  • Do I have to buy supplements? You shouldn't. No supplements needed for good results.

  • What does it cost in total? Monthly plans can add up. We broke down what weight loss coaching costs in Austin if you want to compare.

Questions people ask

How much weight can you lose with online coaching? It varies a lot by person. Studies show a few pounds to over 15 in the first few months. The bigger question is whether it stays off.

How often should I talk to my coach? Weekly is the sweet spot for most people. Less than that and it's easy to drift.

Can online coaching help if I'm on a GLP-1? Yes. Coaching helps you eat well enough to keep your muscle and build habits that hold if the medication stops. Talk to your prescriber first.
